People read the Nutrition Facts Label on food for different reasons. As of 2020, the U.S. FDA has finalized a new Nutrition Facts Label for packaged foods to make it easier to make informed choices that support a healthy diet. Here’s the aspects that’ve been updated to help you better understand its contents: 1. Servings: The number of “Servings Per Container” and “Serving Size” have increased and are in larger or bolder font. These have been updated to better reflect how much people actually eat and drink. 2. Calories: “Calories” is larger and bolder. 3. Fat: “Calories from Fat” has been removed because research shows that the type of fat consumed is more important than the amount. 4. Added Sugars: “Added Sugars” in grams and as a percent Daily Value (%DV) is now required on the label. Added sugars account for the sugars added during the processing of foods, foods packaged as sweeteners, sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. Data shows that it’s difficult to meet nutrient needs while staying within calorie limits if you consume more than 10% of your total daily calories from added sugar. 5. Nutrients: The lists of nutrients that are required or permitted on the label have been updated. Vitamin D and Potassium are now required because Americans don’t always get the recommended amounts. The Daily Values for nutrients have also been updated based on newer scientific evidence. The Daily Values are reference amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceed each day and are used to calculate the %DV. 6. Footnote: The footnote at the bottom of the label has changed to better explain the meaning of %DV. In honor of MS Awareness Week, we’re featuring our CFO, Danielle Muzzupappa. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that can cause symptoms throughout the body. Danielle’s first MS flare occurred in high school, while she was driving her younger brother to school. “I started feeling pins along the side of my body.” Her diagnosis was later confirmed under the care of Northwestern Medicine. Danielle has never let MS hold her back and is open about the continued struggles that come with MS, including having fatigue and occasional brain fog. She explains, “MS is a part of who I am, but I never let it define me as a person. It’s a battle that I wasn’t going to lose.” Danielle continues to fight for others too and is captain of Team Red Hots, a Walk MS team. She’s been participating in Walk MS since 2008 and has raised more than $130,000 for MS Society. March is National Nutrition Month, and we’re kicking it off with some tips each week to help incorporate balanced nutrition in your lifestyle. This week, we’re focusing on eating a balanced plate and food variety. What’s On My Plate? Here’s a general guideline to build a balanced plate for each meal: 1. 1/2 of your plate vegetables or fruits – Aim for a variety of colors. Colors = higher vitamin and antioxidant content, which help fight against disease 🍓🍌🥦🥕 2. 1/4 plate whole grains – Choosing whole grains rather than refined has a milder effect on blood sugar and insulin. Reach for options like brown rice, quinoa, and sprouted breads 🥖 3. ¼ plate protein and fats – Incorporating animal and plant proteins in your diet increases muscle mass, supports bone structure, boosts metabolism and fat burning, and aids in satiation 🥩 4. Extras: Oils, spices, seasonings – Choose oils like olive, coconut, sunflower, or avocado oil to cook and prep foods in. Adding spices and seasonings to each of your food groups makes your plate savory and flavorful! 🥑 It’s important to incorporate nutrients from a variety of food sources. Make a point to try different vegetables, fruits, whole grains, proteins, fats, and seasonings each time you go to the grocery store and see which foods work best for your lifestyle. This week, we’re featuring Community Nutrition Network and Senior Services Association (CNNSSA) for our Business of the Week campaign! For more than 30 years, @mealsonwheels_ni has been providing meals and resources to older adults and persons with disabilities. Rooted in community, their cause has been to help seniors live active and independent lives by addressing isolation and food insecurity. Thankfully, with the help of 861 active volunteers, CNNSSA provided 830,000 meals to 7,300 clients this past year. In 2020, CNNSSA became the sole meal provider for Will County due to the organization’s record of accomplishment as well as the need for the program’s services. Now, the traditional home-delivered meal service is offered five days per week across more than 3,000 square mile service area that includes Cook, Grundy, Kendall, and Will Counties in northern Illinois. CNNSSA also offers community cafés five days per week for active older adults to socialize in addition to the fresh cooked meals. Although the cafés are temporarily closed due to COVID-19, active adults are able to receive daily meals to-go and thanks to our Wellness Check volunteers, clients receive daily calls to check-in on their wellbeing. Community support is essential to the organization’s operations.
